Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Can anyone recommend another GD (live download) forum?

Although I have been downloading from this site for years now I only recently checked out this Forum.

I was looking for some hot show recommendations and also some technical info regarding certain download formats. However, not only did I find a lack of a decent search engine to search older postings but must also sadly discover that this forum is full of nasty posts, cursing and tons of inappropriate and somewhat appalling posts not at all related to GD music or their downloads.

Could anyone, perhaps, recommend another site that is decently dedicated to GD AUD recordings, their reviews and technical info etc.

Any help tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks guys,

I'll look for the recommended user and check back again. Perhaps, I have jumped the gun a little but was rather schocked at some of the content here.

PS. I do love soundboards too but always compare as some AUDS just catch the atmosphere and memories better ! :-)

"...jumped the gun..." Well, that's perfectly understandable give the antics of the past few days, but that's the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Forum. Stick around, pick and choose, post questions, post comments on DEAD shows, and get to know the folks that contribute on issues on importance to you and it can defn work out...I have been here long enough to have seen your scenario play out positively a handful of times (ie, shocked and surprised newbie begins posting; learns who to ignore, benefits from a few good souls here, goes on to become a "regular" and indeed, starts providing input and even nonDEAD posts having established "relationships" with other regulars, etc., etc., etc.).

Of course the "I am OUTTA here!" scenario has worked out a few times as well following some especially poor posting by some, forcing the newbie to seek greener pastures elsewhere...we just have a hard time getting Rob to take the hint and pursue that option to our great benefit.

Here's hoping!

I love this forum. It took a while to figure out that it's not so much a gold mine, but rather a minefield.
Having successfully completed the "political compass test" was no garuantee that I would find a comfort zone here. Even amongst my Gandi brethern I find little tolerance for my affection of Grateful Dead post 91. And to post something of the melodramtic sort, well thats a can of worms w/ no bottom, methinks

And of course, "omit needless words", which shockingly, I merely consider, rarely heed.

Nice to see you here - I've been using your covers for years (gotta be the same jessandra, no?). No reason to give up on the archive just because some (ob)noxious individuals do reside here with the expressed purpose to upset. BTW, do you still maintain your site? I lost the link awhile back - your covers were (are) very nice!

Thanks daliguana,

Yes, it's the same me. My covers are still online but I haven't done or added anything in years and some links and the guestbook are gone or outdated and part of the text seems to have turned into funny symbols. I always get side-tracked with other hobbies. ,-)

I actually started doing covers again a few months ago but only of certain (mostly older)shows that I particularly fancy. I'll get around to adding them someday and updating the site.

Hey J--as has been noted above, and put rather well by a "newbie", DianaW, it's good and bad, just like most things...there are more regulated sites, BUT I can assure you, none of them have the range of techno abilities (ie, the sum of the Forum parts...), nor the depth of historical review material than what is available here.

You can post a techno related query and almost always get mutliple detailed answers/advice within 24 hrs. You do have to be selective with respect to the posts, as jgl notes above, but those such as Tiger, Arbuthnot, and a handful of others, regularly provide complete tutorials for various DEAD related activities of various sorts ("torrenting"). Folks such as Dead Head Monte provide unique and informative historical insights, esp with regard to recording; Dali, as you know, provides constant supplies of CD artwork; LiA offers amazingly detailed summaries of song histories and the like.

Sure, you have to put up with a lot of drivel about this and that, but if you learn to simply skip posts of mine, and a few others that rarely post about the DEAD, and focus on posts of the folks just mentioned, or simply post only when you have questions, you will find this place is treasure of useful information. And, if you get to know enough of the regulars, you'll come to enjoy some of the nonDEAD posts for the personalities involved...

Mother and daughter are both quite well, thank you.

We named her Izabella Faith, the former to honor her sister of a year ago Ellah, and the latter because we had no other choice.

"Although I have been downloading from this site for years now but I only recently checked out the Forum."

What a shame... Judging from a lot of the show "reviews", this is quite common - people can browse Dead shows on the Archive for years without ever noticing this forum!
Or, when they do spot it, of course the first thing they see is post after post of insults & nonsense.....

But, there's no use complaining, because this is still the best GD forum I've seen, in spite of itself.
As a new user, you have to give it time. Yes, it's arranged badly, there are no 'stickies' or 'forum FAQs' to help newcomers, & the search function isn't too great; and yes, most posts are junk. But over time, a wealth of knowledge & recommendations has accumulated.
Ideally, before posting, newbies can lurk for a while checking out the posts. I think in just a few days, it's pretty easy to spot who the trolls are, whose posts to ignore, etc; once you have patience & learn who's who, this place becomes much more manageable. And once you get the hang of searching for older posts (by keywords, for instance), you might be surprised how much you can find.

[but we do it CONSTANTLY anyhow! sometimes our complaining is worse than the original offense...no offense, just complaining about some of the complaining, but not THIS complaining, BTW]

"...because this is still the best GD forum I've seen, in spite of itself..."

[ain't that the freakin truth??! and, who has time for more than one or two anyhow?]

The Grateful Dead Listening Guide has a number of recommendations and a healthy aud bias. Besides reviews of a few dozen individual shows there are posts on "The Audience Recording", "The Quiet Allure of Audience Tapes",
and "Best AUDs Ever!".
There's also a podcast of
"Audience Appreciation".

I think you're right that auds can capture the feeling of being at the show better than boards can. I never cared about that much when there was always another tour coming up in a few months, but now the auds and our memories are all we have left to hold on to that.

P.S. I hope all of those links come through properly, if not, they are all under http://deadlistening.blogspot.com/ .

I'll agree with S Cueball.

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=forumPost%3A1%20AND%20light%20into%20ashes

A good AUD reference site is www.gdluckynumbers.org - but I do not think it is updated regularly.

One thing I like to do is click on the downloadable link and then use Sort by Date added, this will float the most recent downloadable AUDs to the top. Surprisingly there are real high quality AUDs constantly getting added - granted most are later era but occasional older stuff gets added. Seek and Find.

I can only go by experience - what I see is that the 'un-moderated' forums are a little rougher than moderated forums. I like this place because of the self regulated nature - sure it gets crazy and dysfunctional once in a while but after a while you get a good feel for who's who. Not sure who originally said it but it was along the lines of "reply to the post not the poster".

Often, this Forum can provide exactly what you seek, it's a case of bad timing. Look down this list for the user known as "lightintoashes' and click on his name; you will find dozens of informative posts... too much to absorb in fact. I'll apologize for the Forum in general for it's state right now. Also, you might want to check back in awhile and see if it hasn't settled down... it's been very helpful and fun in the past, and may be again some day.

Thanks everyone, for making me feel more comfortable here. I'm busy looking around and slowly finding some of the info I was originally hoping for.

I guess I was just frustrated that the 1st postings I stumbled across were - well, rather unpleasant and nothing to do with the GD or their music.

It is still a shame that there isn't a search engine specifically for this forum though.

Actually if you use the Search box at the top of the page and search forums, you will essentially be searching this forum. It is by far and away the most active of all the forums at the IA. In fact it was created by being separated out of the LMA forum in early 2006 (if my memory serves me). If you go to the IA main site they list recent posts in all forums and as you can see of the last 100, 80 were from this forum.

http://www.archive.org/iathreads/posts-display-new.php?limit=100

Oh and welcome aboard. I think the more the merrier and the better the conversations get. As for the ugly stuff, ignore it or avoid it. Responses are exactly what trolls want.
